Wuyi has the older paper trail, and scholars dispute what tea it actually describes. Anxi has the founding legend, dated to three different centuries depending on who tells it. Neither county can prove which one first stopped oxidation partway and built the category.

Two unconnected groups of migrants did exactly that within about a decade of each other, and planted two rival Fujian-style tea traditions a few miles apart in the hills above Taipei: Muzha's rolled Tieguanyin and Wenshan's barely-rolled pouchong.
